'Threats to kill' during police stand-off

A MAN was said to have threatened to kill police during a disturbance in a Kent town yesterday.

Officers were called to a house in Alexandra Road, Chatham, at about 6pm and were at the scene for more than an hour.

Neighbours had called 999 after a man was heard shouting at people in the street while brandishing a knife.

When officers arrived, the man dropped the knife then picked up a hammer and allegedly started making threats to kill.

A police spokesman said: "A man was arrested after police were called to a house in Alexandra Road, Chatham, at 5.55pm.

"The 34-year-old man was arrested at 7.20pm following a stand-off with officers."

The man is due to be questioned later today.
