Tugar the tiger celebrated his 13th birthday with some wrapped presents left by keepers in his enclosure at Port Lympne wild animal park.

The excitement of finding the gifts didn’t diminish when Tugar, his mate Ingrid and their two cubs Rosa and Zaria discovered the boxes were empty.

Head Keeper Richard Barnes said: “The enrichment worked well as the presents provided something novel for the group.

"Tugar was not that interested in them unfortunately, but Rosa and Zaria loved running around with them and tearing them apart.”

The Amur tiger is the largest of all the cats and a male can weigh up to 47 stone and measure up to 12 foot long.

They are critically endangered and figures show there may be as few as 500 left in the wild.

This Sunday, the animal park near Hythe is celebrating World Tiger Day, which will include special feeding session and games for the tigers along with quizzes and talks for visitors.
