Two post offices to close in borough

Royal Mail has announced the closure of two of the borough’s post offices despite residents’ objections.

Brampton Road and Foots Cray post offices will be shut in spite of petitions against the closures and representations for Brampton Road by David Evennett MP for Bexleyheath and Crayford.

Mr Evennett was concerned that people with mobility problems would suffer if they had to travel to Wrotham Road - the alternative branch suggested by Royal Mail.

However the closure will go ahead with the first wave of post offices closing next month.

The closure is part of the London Plan which sees 155 branches closing across the city.

The announcement follows a six-week consultation and fits with national criteria announced by the Government stating 99 per cent of the UK population should be within three miles of their local branch and 90 per cent of the population to be within one mile.

It is also hoped the closures will put the Post Office back on a stable footing, as fewer people are using its services.
