Welling’s Blue Square South play-off dreams remain alive and kicking after a comfortable win at cash-strapped Weymouth.

The hosts, who are heading for administration at best, could yet be wound-up before the end of the season and they were forced to field a much-changed side against the Wings.

Indeed, only three players in their starting line-up took to the field in their home defeat against runaway leaders Newport seven days earlier.

The hosts battled hard but their inexperience showed in the end as Welling wore them down with three second half goals.

The margin of victory should have been greater but for some wasteful first-half finishing.

Sam Hurrell’s fifth minute shot was deflected wide before Tom Whitnell’s header was disallowed for offside.

Player-manager Jamie Day’s (pictured) free-kick was beaten away, Lee Clarke blazed over and Hurrell’s volley was turned behind all within the first half-hour.

The home side somehow kept their goal intact seven minutes before the break when Graeme Andrews and Whitnell both failed to force the ball over the line.

Welling came out with more purpose in the second half and took the lead within four minutes when Clarke headed in Day’s free-kick.

Loui Fazakerley had an effort cleared off the line before it was 2-0 on 56 minutes when Day’s corner was headed in by Dean Cracknell.

Chances continued to come Welling’s way with Clarke again being denied by home keeper Tim Sandercombe.

Substitute Tony Finn saw his effort tipped over with eight minutes to go and Clarke headed against the bar in the 89th minute.

The third goal finally arrived in stoppage time when Clarke headed in his second and the Wings striker then missed a chance to complete his hat-trick when he sent a 93rd minute penalty crashing against the crossbar.

On a day when most of the Blue Square South play-off contenders won nothing less than three points would do and Day’s men can now look forward to Wednesday night’s trip to Eastleigh with renewed confidence.

A Warren McBean brace gave Bromley a 2-0 victory over Worcester City.

McBean got his first five minutes before the break when he tucked the ball into the net after being picked out by a Rob Gillman pass. McBean added his second on 55 minutes after being set-up by Ashley Carew.
