Curbs planning several signings

ALAN CURBISHLEY: "I want a squad capable of competing in the Premier League”

CHARLTON’S summer spending will not be restricted to one big-name player, manager Alan Curbishley has assured supporters.

With money to invest from Scott Parker’s £10m transfer to Chelsea, plus a healthy percentage from Jermain Defoe’s £7m transfer from West Ham to Tottenham, Charlton are expected to be among the big spenders when the transfer window opens.

But Curbishley insists: “Whatever money I have to spend will not be spent on one player. It will go towards strengthening the squad.

“I want to spend it wisely so when we return for pre-season training, we have healthy competition in every area. I want a squad capable of competing in the Premier League.”

Speculation persists that Curbishley has spoken with the representatives of two foreign-based players. Charlton have also been strongly linked with a move for Leicester’s Muzzy Izzet, but he confirmed at the weekend that he expects to join Birmingham.

For now, Curbishley is sharply focused on rounding off the season with a win in Saturday’s sell-out against Southampton at The Valley.

Victory would give the club 53 points - one more than their best ever Premiership points total in the 2000-01 season.

He said: “We’ve not won at home for four games so we need to beat Southampton. If we don’t finish higher than ninth then I can say that it’s been a disappointing season for us.”

Meanwhile, Charlton may have to wait until next month to discover whether they have qualified for next season's UEFA Cup.

The club are third in England’s Fair Play League, behind Arsenal and Chelsea, who are both bound for the Champions League.

The leading country in Europe’s Fair Play League gains an extra entry to the UEFA Cup. The European League ends on May 31 and UEFA name the winners on June 8.
