Debutants inspire Wings to victory

Welling United 3 Eastleigh 1

NEW-LOOK Welling produced a scintillating performance to see off big-spending Eastleigh at Park View Road on Saturday.

The Wings fielded new signings Ross Montague and Marlon Patterson and both had inspired debuts.

A quiet first half came to life eight minutes before half-time when Montague and strike partner Fabian Quintyn combined to set up Leon Solomon whose left-foot curler from 20 yards was his first goal in a Welling shirt.

The Wings successfully negotiated the start of the second half and doubled their lead on 55 minutes.

Brilliant wing play by Patterson found Montague at the far post and his lay-off was turned in by Quintyn.

Richard Carpenter curled home the third when Eastleigh keeper James Pullen made a mess of his left-wing free-kick four minutes later.

It could have been worse for the visitors but Pullen beat away man-of-the-match Montague's right-footed drive as the Wings continued to produce flowing football.

Eastleigh pulled a goal back with 10 minutes remaining when substitute Matt Hann's deflected shot found the bottom corner.

Despite four minutes of stoppage time the Wings successfully held the visitors at bay to end a run of three consecutive defeats.
