Gillingham v Crewe Alexandra

DEFENDER Barry Ashby is in contention for a recall to the Gillingham line-up against Crewe at Priestfield on Saturday.

Ashby has been suffering from a sprained ankle and has not played since the match against Ipswich on March 19.

But Stan Ternent's team will be without Alan Pouton who is absent after suffering a family bereavement.

The visitors have not won any of their last 16 league games, but Gills boss Stan Ternent says his side will not be taking anything for granted.

He said: "It will be a tough match. Crewe are a dangerous team. They haven’t won for a long time and we haven’t lost for a long time so I don’t want to tempt fate but it will be a difficult match.

"I am surprised that they haven’t won a game since Dean Ashton left to go to Norwich but I know Dario and he has got some good players who like to play football."

And Ternent pinpointed Northern Ireland striker Steve Jones as Crewe’s dangerman.

"Jonesy was a kid I had at Bury," said Ternent. "He is lively and an international now and we know he is a very good player.

"They have got a few seasoned campaigners and Crewe have been in the Championship for some time. It will be a challenge for us but we’ll look forward to it."

Defender Barry Ashby will come into contention after an ankle injury but Alan Pouton will miss out after suffering a family bereavement.

There will be a minute’s silence before the match in memory of former Gills youth team striker Paul Sykes, who died on Tuesday while playing for Folkestone.
