Ford: Why I axed keeper Turner

Welling manager Andy Ford has defended his decision to axe keeper Jamie Turner.

The Wings boss dropped Turner for the goalless midweek draw at Bognor, blaming his error in the defeat at Hayes & Yeading and a long-standing groin problem.

Ford said: "I was disappointed with the goal we conceded last Saturday and Jamie still has a bit of a groin problem.

"It's not cleared up totally yet and that was playing in my mind. Was it fair to put his team-mates and yourself on the line when you are 75 per cent fit?"

Ford gave Scott Andrews his chance in goal against Bognor, and he made a couple of smart saves to keep a clean sheet.

"Scott has been sitting patitently and waiting for his chance," added Ford.

"He wasn't going to sit around forever, he did that last season and has got to be playing now.

"I thought he did well and that was the case in pre-season, he didn't do anything wrong for us then.

"But Jamie Turner will come good again for us and I'm lucky to have two good keepers in my squad."
