Goal famine concerns Smith

SMITH: "...the good thing is that we are creating the chances"

WELLING player-manager Neil Smith has admitted his main priority remains his strike force as the club’s goal drought continues.

The Wings have scored just three goals in five pre-season matches after scraping a 1-0 success at Kent League Erith Town on Saturday.

"It’s a big concern," said Smith. "They need to be more aggressive and believe they can score goals.

"Omari Coleman showed that aggression when he came on against Erith but he failed to score as well.

"I’ve got two weeks to work on it and get it right – and that means either the players I have got or by bringing players in.

"I know people are concerned about it and I am too, but the good thing is that we are creating the chances."

Smith has signed Lloyd Blackman and Steve Harper was retained by the club before the new boss was installed. But doubts still remain over the future of Andrew Sam and Coleman.

Millwall forward Ross Gaynor played for Fisher on Saturday after two appearances for the Wings as he decides which club he wants to join.

Smith added: "I’ve spoken to Ross’ agent and he told me he wants full-time football. He played left-wing for Fisher but when I spoke to him he wanted to play up front."

The Wings host a West Ham XI this Wednesday night (August 1). Tickets are available in advance. Call 020 8301 1196 for details.
