Keeper backs promotion bid

Simon Royce believes Mark Stimson can guide Gills back to League 1
Simon Royce believes Mark Stimson can guide Gills back to League 1

Gillingham keeper Simon Royce feels the current squad assembled by boss Mark Stimson is good enough to challenge at the top of League 2 and may only need a few changes.

Royce put pen to paper on a new deal last week, and is keen to play his part in what he believes could be a promotion campaign.

“We put in some decent performances towards the end of the season and we just need to get a couple more players in now,” he said.

“We’ve got some good young players coming through like Luis Cumbers and Andy Pugh, and they will be a big part of it.

“We just need another centre-half, like Danny Cullip, which would be great, then maybe a centre-forward and a keeper.

“I don’t mind that, because the competition is healthy and it keeps you on your toes. I don’t mind who they bring in – bring in whoever.”

Meanwhile, Gills midfielder Adam Miller has had surgery on a troublesome groin injury while Barry Fuller has had two plates and seven screws inserted in two broken fingers on his left hand.
