Mark McCammon finally made his debut on Saturday as Gillingham manager Mark Stimson was pleased to see his side end their pre-season campaign on a high.

A low-key test at Thurrock’s Ship Lane was wrapped up in the opening half after Nicky Southall and Simeon Jackson scored in a 2-0 win.

McCammon was signed last month but a hamstring injury had up until Saturday ruled him out of contention – and he wasn’t the only player to recover from injury.

"We’re pleased with his 45 minutes and Mark showed what he’s got," said Stimson.

"He looked a handful. It was what we lacked last year and hopefully we’ll see a lot more of that.

"If he gets through the next week’s training okay then there’s no reason why he can’t start against Bournemouth but you never know what’s going to happen.

"Fingers crossed Mark will be available. If he’s available, he’ll be starting.

"On Saturday Dennis Oli rang up unwell and couldn’t attend the game.

"It was good to see Nicky Southall and Gary Mulligan back in the side and playing a part. They’ve come through with no problems.

"It was a strong line-up because we wanted to finish on a positive.

"Results don’t count for a lot in pre-season but it’s always nice to finish with a good performance and, with a result as well, it’s a great way to finish pre-season."
