Pardew has little sympathy over Fortune red card

CHARLTON defender Jon Fortune found manager Alan Pardew in unsympathetic mood following Saturday’s last-second dismissal for violent conduct in the 3-1 home win against Ipswich.

Neil Swarbrick produced a red card after the Charlton defender appeared to elbow Ipswich striker Alan Lee.

Fortune’s three-match suspension rules him out of Saturday’s trip to Championship promotion rivals West Brom, the home game against Hull on December 22 and the Boxing Day match at Norwich.

With games thick and fast over Christmas, Fortune’s needless ban restricts Pardew’s options at a critical time.

“Jon suffered a crazy moment for which he will be fined and disciplined,” Pardew confirmed.

“He and Alan Lee had a monster battle all afternoon and it was a shame they didn’t shake hands at the end. Jon did something stupid, I’ve spoken to him and he’s very disappointed.

“The biggest sufferer will be him because he will be out of the side for three games.

“After the season he’s been having that’s a bit of a downer for him. The referee said that he punched Lee in the face but I believe it was less severe.”
