Gillingham manager Mark Stimson has instructed his players to get back to basics following Saturday’s thrashing at Bury.

The Gills ended a three-game winning streak with a 4-0 defeat at Gigg Lane and slipped to 10th in the League 2 table.

Stimson had seen his side climb into the play-off positions last weekend, but isn’t too worried about the end of Gills’ good run, describing the result as a “minor setback”.

“It’s frustrating but you’re never ever convinced you have cracked it because once you do that you’re going to hit a brick wall,” he said.

“We knew we would go to Bury and we would be up for a challenge because last week they lost at home and were on a bad run. They wanted to turn that around.

“It’s a minor setback because we wanted to go to Bury and get something. It’s a long season and there are going to be loads of twists and turns before it finishes.

“Bury are a good side and play a certain way and they test you and I’m sure they’ll be up there.

“We have to try and get back to how we’ve been playing recently and put this behind us. If we do that I’m sure we’re going to go on and win some games and come the turn of the year that’s when it really does get interesting.

“We have to get back to the basics, what we have been doing and what we know we can do. If we do that, then we’ll win more games than we lose and come the end of the season we’ll be right in among it."
