Two players made their Gillingham debuts on Saturday and boss Peter Taylor is aiming to hand out a couple more in the coming weeks.

In the previous week, the new permanent Gills boss has clinched the signings of John Mousinho, Craig Fagan and Elliott Hewitt.

Taylor is now keen to strengthen further, with a defender being the main priority.

He said: “I explained a few things to the chairman and said where we needed to improve and he has allowed me to go and bring three players in.

“I am still going to try and get a couple more. He (the chairman) has been first class and the lads have responded. If you are in charge of any team and they work hard for you, then you can sleep at night.

“Like any manager, you always want to improve your team and if there was something out there much better and I thought someone could improve our chances of winning matches, then I would always go to (chairman) Paul Scally and mention it to him.

“I haven’t got a clue if we can buy anyone but, of course, I am aware of the budget.

“One thing is for sure, sometimes you already have good players in the building and it is about just getting the best out of them.”

Fagan made his first appearance for any club this season when he played 79 minutes on Saturday – longer than Taylor had anticipated.

Taylor said: “He has been without a club and it just shows you that in football, you can never relax.

“We never expected him to play longer than an hour but he had to stay on because of the substitutions we had to make before that. He did well but then he got cramp.”
