By-election for Fant ward to be held next month after death of Alistair Black

A by-election for the Fant ward of Maidstone will be held next month.

It follows the death of councillor Alistair Black who died suddenly at his home in Tonbridge Road, Maidstone, on Monday, July 13.

He passed away just months after being re-elected as a Conservative councillor in May's election.

So far, Conservative Matt Boughton, 22, a former Oakwood Park Grammar School student, has announced he will be standing.

Meanwhile, the Liberal Democrats have named landlady of The Walnut Tree, Tonbridge Road, Rosaline Janko as their candidate. She came second place in May's election.

On Friday the Green Party announced Stuart Jeffery would be standing as their candidate. He missed out by 83 votes last time.

Those wishing to stand have until 4pm on Thursday, August 13 to register.

The election will take place on Thursday, September 10.

Alistair Black joined the council in 2011. He was born in Glasgow and served in the RAF and British Transport Police before moving to Africa to run his own management consultancy business. He moved to Maidstone six years ago.
