It is not known what was being filmed, but a passerby was told was a science fiction production.

“They said it was a science fiction thing,” he said.

“It must have been something quite professional though.

“There were quite a few people on the crew, and they had some high quality looking equipment.”

Traffic management services and police cars were parked nearby.

Pudding Lane was closed at its junction with the High Street from 5pm to 5am today (May 20) to allow crews to shoot along the road.

The Kent Film Office has been contacted for further information.

It is not the first time production crews have descended on Maidstone.

In March, it was revealed scenes from Guy Ritchie's latest eight-part crime-drama series, The Gentlemen, were shot at Detling Diner along the A249.

Parts of This Time with Alan Partridge Season 2, Whitstable Pearl and The Last Rite were also filmed in the county town.
