A pub proudly boasting to be England's worst comedy venue is up for sale.

And new owners could continue a funny story which has included lines by Graham Norton, Bill Bailey, Jo Brand, Mark Lamarr, Jimmy Carr and Catherine Tate.

All have performed in its Thursday night comedy spot in the last 18 years, as have impressionist Alistair McGowan, and Jonathan Creek actor and QI panellist Alan Davies.

Husband and wife Peter and Carol Henn are looking to sell the pub in Tonbridge Road, Maidstone, and retire, but can not be sure new owners would want to continue the legacy of laughter.

Mr Henn, 62, said his proudest moment came when the pub was reviewed in The Independent as the worst comedy venue in England in a poll by comedians.

The review said the Walnut Tree bore a resemblance to Kathy Bates’ house in the film Misery.

He said: “I started in 1990. We hit on alternative comedy as it was called then.

“The first act we had was a duo called the Rubber Bishops; one of them was Bill Bailey."

He added: “Running pubs is a lot about personality. It’s show business."
