A village stepped back into the 1940s with a traditional street party to mark the 70th anniversary of VE Day.

The village came alive with Lindy Hop dancers, Punch and Judy shows and good old-fashioned fair games on Sunday.

It comes in the same week political leaders (some now outgoing) took part in ceremony to mark the anniversary at the Cenotaph in London.

More than 500 people poured into Yalding High Street for the celebration, many sporting wartime costumes, and were able to tuck into a traditional fish and chip supper alongside their neighbours.

The Scouts ran games including a coconut shy, bowling for a pig and hop scotch, and visitors could take a look at vintage vehicles on display.

There was also a contest for the best dressed.

Yalding Parish Council chairman Geraldine Brown, who organised the day, was delighted with the turn-out.

She said: “We were badly flooded and for over a year our community was split with people living away, so VE Day was a good opportunity to hold an event. We love a party in Yalding – any excuse and we’ll close the street and come out to celebrate.”
