Maidstone United striker Adam Birchall hails special moment after scoring winner for hometown club

Adam Birchall was buzzing after scoring the winner for hometown club Maidstone on Saturday - but claimed he got lucky.

Birchall met Callum Driver’s ball across goal as Stones beat Havant 1-0 to move up to 12th in National League South.

Boss Jay Saunders praised the movement of his on-loan frontman and while Birchall himself was pleased with the run, he revealed Driver was going for goal.

He said: “I had a bit of luck because I think it was a shot from Callum rather than a cross.

“But, especially in the position I was playing, you do have to time your movement in there.

“Callum did great getting forward and he put it in there.”

It was Birchall’s first goal since joining on a season-long loan from Bromley.

He said: “It won’t sink in until I get home and my daughter was here today, so it was a special moment.

“It’s a lovely place to come and play your football. I know a lot of people here, the lads are a great group and the gaffer’s made it really easy for me to come in and just worry about my football, which is what you want.

“We’ve been searching for that win for a couple of games but with the draw at Gosport and now beating Havant, hopefully we can build on this momentum.”
