Maidstone United skipper Ben Lewis quit the club this week to join Ryman League Premier Division strugglers Margate.

The 31-year-old defender followed team-mate Aaron Lacy out of Bourne Park to join the Thanet club, who are desperate to retain their Premier Division status, and are understood to have offered Lewis much-improved financial terms that Stones couldn’t match.

However it’s thought the transfer was registered past the 5pm deadline on Tuesday, and the Ryman League still need to rubber-stamp the move.

Meanwhile the race for the play-offs continues to throw up plenty of twists and turns. Wealdstone, who visit Stones on Saturday, were the only side to win in midweek with as many as six clubs now separated by only seven points.
