MPs Tracey Crouch and Damian Green to meet with a minister after City Link went into administration, leading to redundancies in Larkfield and Ashford

Two Kent MPs today met with a government minister to discuss the treatment of City Link employees after the company announced it was going into administration.

The parcel delivery company went into administration on Christmas Day, threatening the jobs of 2,727 employees across the country.

On New Year's Eve 41 employees at the City Link depot at Bellingham Way, Larkfield discovered they were made redundant, along with 19 from Ashford's branch.

Seven workers at Larkfield and five at Ashford will be retained for a period while the firm’s existing business is wound up.

The announcement prompted Aylesford MP Tracey Crouch and Ashford MP Damian Green to release a joint statement expressing their shock at the timing of the closure.

Today they met with employment minister Esther McVey to discuss their concerns.

Miss Crouch said: "We want to make sure ministers are aware of the effect this has had not just on direct employees but also indirect ones.

"We also want those affected from the depots to get the best terms of reference for redundancy."

She said that a local employment agency had been left counting the cost of unpaid invoices, costing tens of thousands of pounds.

After the meeting she told the Kent Messenger: “I am very disappointed that the depot will be closing but we are reassured by the minister that those directly affected will get all the support of the Department for Work and Pensions."

Employees received advice and support with their redundancy notices, explaining what support they could receive from local job centres.

The government understands there are 93 similar jobs available in the area currently.

But Miss Crouch said she will be meeting with the business minister Matthew Hancock to find out more about the help for indirect workers including sub-contractors.

Today City Link's administrators reached an agreement to sell certain City Link Limited assets to logistics firm DX for £1.125m.

DX chief executive Petar Cvetkovic said: “It is very sad that City Link has been unable to continue as a going concern, particularly for its employees and contractors.

"The administrators are now proceeding with an orderly sale of assets and we have made a limited investment to acquire certain assets.

"We are also doing all we can to provide opportunities for former City Link employees and contractors and to offer solutions to customers who may need a new carrier.”

A Facebook page called City Link Job Board has been set up to help affected workers find new jobs.

It is understood they will be paid in January for all work undertaken before their notice of redundancy.
