£4m to be spent on road repairs in Medway

A facelift is being promised for Medway’s cracked and crumbling roads over the next two years.

The councillor responsible for highways, Cllr Phil Filmer, is planning to spend an extra £4 million to bring the roads up to standard.

He told councillors this would be in addition to what was normally spent on the roads.

Cllr Filmer said: “It gives us a good chance of catching up and getting in front with the maintenance.”

He insisted the underlying road foundations were structurally sound. “We are trying to get everything up to scratch,” he told the regeneration scrutiny committee.

The council has carried out 92 highways schemes this year on the borough’s 1,200 miles of pavement and 600 miles of road, and repaired more than 200 road barriers.

In the coming three years the Government is providing £13m for the A2, £1.5m to transform Gillingham station, and £9m on the A228.

The seven yellow bus routes are now being used by nearly 400 children every day.

The council has saved £500,000 with a new contract to provide special needs transport.

Cllr Filmer said: “There were a few problems when it started, but standards have not fallen.”
