Man arrested after police hunt for driver who allegedly failed to stop for police in Gillingham

A man has been arrested after a police hunt through Gillingham involving armed officers.

Police attempted to stop a car at noon, which then allegedly drove off.

The helicopter was deployed and officers chased the car to Saunders Street.

Firearms officers were called as a precaution.

A man from London has been arrested and is currently in custody.

Inquiries are ongoing.

Residents in Saunders Street and Fox Street are thought to have been told to stay indoors during the incident and nearby James Street is also thought to have been closed by police.

Six police cars and a riot van were also spotted in the area.
