Two men have been arrested on suspicion of stealing a car after a police chase on the A2.

The pair, aged 19 and 20, from Gillingham, were thought to be in a silver Citroen Picasso which allegedly failed to stop for police in London Road, Strood.

Police gave chase across Rochester Bridge and were in a head-on collision with the car two miles away in Manor Road, Chatham.

Investigators were at the scene for more than four hours after the incident, which happened just after 1pm today. They were expected to leave at 5.45pm.

The crash happened right outside the office window of River ward councillor Craig Mackinlay - who is the Conservatives' candidate for Kent Police and Crime Commissioner.

Cllr Mackinlay said: "I was in my office and there was this massive crunch. The car appeared to have taken out a lot of the scaffolding at the former Theatre Royal.

"One of the police officers was slightly bruised and cut but he was still active and on duty.

"It was interesting to have it on my doorstep but that's life in Chatham, isn't it. It's a bit like that at times."
