Crews tackled a blaze at a house in Rochester in which a man was injured and a dog died.

The blaze broke out in Stoke Road, Allhallows, in Rochester at 3am this morning.

When crews arrived, smoke was billowing from the first floor and roof space of the two-storey building.

A man in his early 40s was treated for the effects of breathing in smoke and was taken to hospital.

A pet dog was rescued from the property but died from its injuries.

Teams worked hard to bring the fire under control and have managed to contain the flames to the terraced property, despite the fire breaking through the roof.

A neighbouring property's roof space has suffered heavy smoke logging. Firefighters used breathing apparatus, a hose reel jet and main jet to tackle the fire.

A thermal imaging camera has been used on neighbouring homes to check for the possible risk of fire spread. A cat was rescued from the property next door.

A ventilation fan has also been used to clear smoke.

Red Cross volunteers have been notified to support the home owner.

A neighbour said: "I didn't see a thing - it just amazes me. I couldn't believe all the fire engines were out here and the smell of plastic - I didn't hear anything until about half an hour ago."

Crews from Rochester, Strood, Thames-side, Maidstone and a retained from Hoo helped tackle the fire.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is under way.
