Firefighters tackle smoking packages in Gillingham Aldi car park

Firefighters have been seen tackling a number of smoking packages in a van parked in a supermarket car park.

Crews were seen searching a white van in the car park of an Aldi in Gillingham this evening.

Eyewitnesses reported smelling "fireworks" as firefighters wearing gas masks searched the white van.

An eyewitness said: "I saw it whilst I was out shopping.

"I couldn't see any fire, but there was a smell of fireworks in the air.

"The fire crews were all wearing breathing apparatus and were hosing down boxes."

It is understood that shoppers were allowed to continue shopping at the centre while the incident took place.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service has been contacted for comment.
