A man has been arrested on suspicion of burglary after an elderly woman was reportedly tricked by a bogus caller.

The incident happened in a road off of Richmond Road in Gillingham between 2.25pm and 2.40pm yesterday (Monday).

It was reported a man claiming to work for the water board was allowed into the home of the victim, who is her 70s, before stealing a quantity of cash from within.

Officers went to visit the woman this morning and found a 40-year-old man from Orpington who they believed to be acting suspiciously in the area.

He was arrested in connection with the reported offence and remains in custody.

DS Richard Taylor of Kent Police said:“While most people who call at our homes are genuine, unfortunately there are some who lie about their identity in order to trick their way inside to steal valuables and money.

“Please be wary about inviting strangers into your property if there is any doubt as to who they are. Remember that people from water, gas and electric companies rarely visit without appointments, and that if there is a real emergency then police and firefighters are likely to be there too.

“If you are not expecting them and they do not have an ID, do not let them in.”

The man has been released on bail pending further enquiries until December 6.
