Medway and Maidstone athletes won a total of 43 medals, including 12 gold, at the Kent County Athletics Championships in Ashford at the weekend.

The junior men’s long jump produced a clean sweep of the podium for M&M’s Stuart Hitchcock (6.71), James Alcock (6.33) and Andre Wright (5.92).

Warm weather at the Julie Rose Stadium on Saturday helped Conrad Williams of Kent AC break the championship record in the senior men’s 400m (47.2) ahead of Luke Smallwood (48.3) of M&M.

The other record to fall on Saturday was the under-17 women’s 300m (40.2) by Frederica Foster of Blackheath and Bromley.

Three records fell in the blustery conditions on Sunday. James Alaka of Blackheath and Bromley took advantage of a following 3.3 metres/sec wind to take the senior 200m (21.01) ahead of Williams (21.19), with M&M’s Luke Smallwood (21.67) missing the bronze by four hundredths of a second.

Former GEC Avionics star Graeme Saker returned to his best event in the Tonbridge strip to set new figures for the M40 2,000m steeplechase (6.30.47).

Dina Asher-Smith of Blackheath and Bromley established an under-15 girl’s 100m record (12.27) with the wind measured at 2.1 metres/sec.

Male title winners for Medway & Maidstone were the high hurdlers Martin Brockman in the senior 110m (15.6); Alex Wharfe in the junior 110m (16.6); Darren March in the junior triple jump (14.31); high jumpers Daniel Alexander in the under-17 competition (1.77) and under-15 Tom Howlett (1.68) and M60 master Steve Holliday in the 3,000m walk (19.53.85).

Female champions were Kate Morris in the senior women’s hammer (39.86), Nadine Terry in the junior high jump (1.55), Sophie Ayre in the under-15 girls’ long jump (5.24), Sophie Copping in the junior women’s 100m hurdles and Rebecca Collins in the junior women’s 3,000m Walk (17.04.44).
