The Strand lido in Gillingham reopens after multiple incidents of criminal damage

An outdoor pool has managed to reopen after being vandalised.

The Strand lido, in Gillingham, had to be closed in recent weeks after a number of incidents, the latest of which was last night (June 14).

At the start of the week, the pool announced it would be opening for extra days this week due to the hot weather.

Despite the damage, workers pulled together and cleared up early this morning to ensure the lido was safe and ready for customers.

Medway Council has thanked Medway Sport and Medway Norse for their efforts.

In a statement, they said: “Thank you to those who set their morning alarms even earlier to help.

“We are very proud to have the UK’s only saltwater riverside outdoor pool in Medway.

“The Strand lido is a much-loved family attraction next to the River Medway in Gillingham.

“We are extremely disappointed that a minority of people are risking its temporary closure.

“Causing intentional damage and vandalism is a criminal offence. It could also be dangerous to enter cold water without appropriate supervision.”

Anyone with information about the suspects and incident last night is asked to report it to Kent Police by calling 01634 792209 and quoting reference 14-1772.
