Power cut closes down cinema

Homes, businesses, pubs and a multiplex cinema in Rochester and Chatham were all knocked out by string of a power cuts last night.

Punters said the Odeon cinema in Chatham Maritime had to close after power was lost to the screens.

UK Power Networks were made aware of problems just before 7.30pm and engineers took two hours to fix all supplies.

However, homes as far afield as Borstal reported repeated power surges.

Disabled Messenger reader Simon Issacharoff, who lives in Chatham High Street, was stuck in his flat when the lifts broke down.

He said on Twitter: "We had no lifts and the car park gates were stuck closed".

The Command House pub and RAFA club in Dock Road, Chatham, both also lost power.

Reader Phil Marlow added on Facebook: "Was working at iPhone Repairs Ltd in the Dockyard and power kept cutting off. Not what you need in the middle of soldering!"

A UK Power Networks spokesman said: "This was a fault on a High Voltage underground cable which was restored in stages within 2 hours."
