suspect package blown up in Upnor

The Army’s bomb disposal team carried out a controlled explosion on a suspect package found in Medway today (Thursday).

A holdall, was found shortly after noon by in Castle Street, Upnor and the police were informed.

A cordon of 100 metres was put up and the bomb disposal team, which has a base in the area, were called in to investigate.

It is believed the holdall contained a part used can of oil or fuel and was blown up as a precaution.

Inspector Kevin Corden said: "Police in Medway received a call at 12.18pm to inform us that a suspicious package, a black holdall, had been found on Castle Street, Upnor.

"Patrols attended the scene and established a 100m cordon in the area.

"The explosive ordnance disposal team also attended the scene and carried out a controlled explosion on the holdall.

"The cordon was lifted shortly after 2pm and the road was reopened."
