Ch Ins Simon Alland said: “Criminals will often wrap seemingly new electrical items in cellophane and sell them at incredibly cheap prices to members of the public.

“By the time you check the device and realise it is completely useless, the seller will have moved on.

“They will call door-to-door, set up impromptu stalls on the street or display their faulty goods in the back of a van.

“My message is simple; if a deal looks too good to be true it probably is.”

Anyone who sees someone selling cheap electrical items that they believe may be stolen should call police on 101 quoting reference 27-1606.

Police have published advice on protecting yourself from all types of fraud, which is available on Kent Police's website.

If you have been misled into buying faulty goods you can also report a trader to Trading Standards through the Citizens Advice consumer helpline.
