Gillingham manager Steve Evans has seen striker targets look elsewhere

Gillingham boss Steve Evans is facing a frustrating hunt for fresh firepower.

Evans was unable to add an extra striker to his squad during the January transfer window but has been looking at free agents to bolster his numbers.

The Gills boss was asked if he was likely to have anyone in by the weekend, ahead of their game against Bristol Rovers on Saturday, and said: “I don’t think we will. We are looking but I don’t think that is close.”

He was looking at several possibilities, hoping to trial a few in training, but admitted the hunt is ongoing.

Evans said: “One of them has gone abroad and one of them has decided he wants to wait for Real Madrid.

“We have to go with what we have got. We have got a good squad of players.”

Recent performances have shown they do have quality already onboard but they don’t have a deep squad. An injury to either John Akinde and/or Vadaine Oliver would leave them short.

Evans highlighted what they currently have, saying: “You don’t go to Sunderland and play the way we played and against Lincoln the way we played, you don’t go to The Valley and win and score the goals we did, you don’t dominate and be the best team by some distance against Peterborough if you don't have a lot right.”
