Gillingham's Jordan Houghton determined to make the most of his missed opportunity against Colchester United

Jordan Houghton admitted he could have done better with his scoring opportunity on Saturday.

Gillingham’s loan midfielder from Chelsea wants to add goals to his repertoire and will learn from his miss against Colchester.

Reflecting on the second-half chance, with the Gills 2-1 down, Houghton said: “I didn’t expect it because there was a mistake from their centre-half. I didn’t expect the ball there.

“My first touch was a little too heavy and I had to stretch to get it round the keeper. He has made a good save down at my feet and maybe had my touch been better then I could have driven it home.

“Goals are something I need to add to my game and I am trying to improve on it in training and score my goals as the season goes on.

“I am really enjoying it here and that is the main thing. I can see there are improvements in my game and I am learning different things. I am getting into better positions and getting chances, which is good, and hopefully the goals will come.”

Gills’ unbeaten run in League 1 came to an end at the Colchester Community Stadium, much to the disappointment of the 19-year-old.

He said: “It would have been nice to have gone the whole season unbeaten but realistically it’s never going to happen. It is a tough league, we’ve got Barnsley coming up at the weekend, we’ll get a good week’s training in and move on to the next game."
