All night relay raises thousands for Cancer Research

Islanders have raised bu money for charity by joinig in with an unusual fund-raising event.

More than 90 people took part in the 24-hour Cancer Research Relay for Life at Barton's Point, Sheerness, last weekend and helped raise more than £10,000 for charity.

The fun started at 1.45pm on Saturday May 3, with a Survivors’ lap of honour and 16 cancer survivors took part. The race then got underway, with members from 10 teams walking around a track and tagging in their team mates, followed by a few fancy dress laps.

Stalls were set up by participants, and many walkers and spectators camped overnight at the Coastal Park in Marine Parade, Sheerness, and walked throughout the night, with evening entertainment provided by band Them Again.

On Sunday morning, entertainment started again with some tai chi sessions and music.

The event finished at 1.45pm with everyone taking part in a final lap.

The event has so far raised £10,395.53, and there is still more money to be banked.

Presentations were made to the team, child and adult that had raised the most money, and a special award called 'Spirit of Relay’ which went to team Bangers 'n’ Meg.

Organiser Lee Ewart, who has been preparing for the event for a year, said: “It was a resounding success and I can’t wait until next year to do it all again. It was everything I had hoped for and more. We had hoped for £10,000 and we have exceeded that already, with even more to come, so I’m over the moon.

“The committee of the Relay for Life would like to thank everybody that took part.”
