Six year old Archie Thompson, who attends Priory Infant School in Ramsgate, met X Factor contestants Freddy Parker and Relly C, and Gogglebox's Sandi Bogle, when he switched on the festive lights at the Broadstairs shopping centre.

Archie is a pupil in Yellow Class at the school who were rewarded for their outstanding participation in the KM Walk to School Super WoW! initiative, which encourages green travel in place of the traditional school run. While other pupils in the class were awarded vouchers for Silver Blades ice rink, Archie was also awarded the opportunity to switch on the lights when his name was picked from a lucky dip.

The evening of celebrations on Thursday, November 10, also launched the Big Christmas Book Drive, which aims to improve literacy skills by providing schools with more books for their libraries. Members of the public are invited to deposit books in receptacles at the shopping centre. They will then be distributed to Thanet schools signed up to KM reading initiative Buster's Book Club.

Francesca Donovan, centre manager at Westwood Cross said of the scheme: “With many retailers such as Marks & Spencer, Waterstones and WH Smith having special offers, it has never been easier to donate.”

Presenters of kmfm's breakfast show Garry and Emma hosted the night of fun and provided the entertainment with a number of local groups also performing.
