He was treated for injuries and airlifted to a London hospital and remains in a critical condition.

It is not known what caused the cyclist, from Hampshire, to fall, and Kent Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit is investigating.

Officers are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

A police spokesman said: "Officers would also like to obtain dashcam footage that shows the cyclist prior to and in the moments leading up to the incident."

A South East Coast Ambulance Service spokesman said: "I can confirm ambulance crews attended and were joined at the scene by the air ambulance service.

"The man was assessed and treated before being airlifted to hospital in London in a serious condition."
