Flood alerts in place at Dartford, Medway, Sheppey, Whitstable, Margate, Ramsgate and Dover

Flood alerts have been issued along the Kent coast from 10am this morning. (Monday, Jan 31)

Flooding is possible two hours either side of high tide between 10am and 2pm and also tonight with strong winds and unsettled weather causing higher water levels than normal.

Four alerts have been issued for Dartford to Allhallows, the tidal River Medway, Medway estuary and Isle of Grain, the Isle of Sheppey and Swale coast from Kemsley to Seasalter including Faversham, the coast from Whitstable to Margate, Ramsgate to Kingsdown and Dover.

A government spokesman warned: "The unsettled weather is likely to continue over the coming days so some further periods of flooding are possible this week. We will issue further messages if required."

He added: "Please be careful in areas around the estuary during this period of concern and avoid contact with flood waters present. We will continue to monitor this situation and have staff prepared to respond if needed."

Information will be updated at 5pm.

A flood alert means you need to prepare because flooding is possible. Government advice includes having a waterproof bag ready for vital items like insurance documents and medications in case you need to leave home. You should also know how to turn off your gas, electricity and water supplies off and plan how you'll move family and pets to safety.

Dartford: Low-lying areas nearest the Thames particularly between Town Pier and the promenade in Gravesend.

Medway: Flooding will affect lower lying areas nearest the Medway Estuary particularly around Strood and Upnor.

Sheppey and Swale: Locations nearest the coast particularly around Faversham Creek.

Whitstable to Margate: Flooding will affect lower lying locations nearest the coast between Whitstable and Margate.

Ramsgate to Kingsdown: Flood alert issued for 10.30pm to 11pm tonight.

Dover: Flood alert from St Margaret's at Cliffe to Sandgate from 10.30pm to 11pm.

High tide at Dover is 10.45pm with a height of 3.61m.
