There were some surprised looks when women were spotted parading around Sheppey in their bras. But it was all done in the best possible taste.

The troupe was taking part in a virtual Moonwalk marathon to raise money for breast cancer.

It normally takes place at night across London but this year, because of Covid, different groups staged different events across the country during the day.

A handful of Islanders gathered at Shellness at 7.30am on Saturday to walk through Leysdown, Eastchurch, Minster, Queenborough and Sheerness before ending at The Leas nearly eight hours later. In all, they raised more than £1,900 and the cash is still coming in.

Tina Nurden said: "We'd like to thank everybody who beeped, hooted, waved and cheered us and to the lovely man in Queenborough who crossed the road to give us £5. That was so good. They all kept us going for 26 miles. It was absolutely amazing."

She added: "I knew we could chat but that eight hours or so went by so quickly, although my feet would slightly disagree. Covid -19 has had a devastating impact for those living with cancer. For many, it has been a lonely, isolating experience. The need for emotional and physical support has never been greater."

Joining her were Steph Gill, Liz Payne, Nichola Lassnig, Alex Holmes and Emma Lee. They were joined by Katie Gill who walked 13 miles, Tatian (10 miles) and Max Paine (six miles).

Walk the Walk started in 1996 when 13 women power-walked the New York City marathon in their bras to raise money and awareness for breast cancer. It has now raised more than £100 million for vital breast cancer causes such as emergency grants to frontline services and charities.
