Flats plan for Sittingbourne town centre, between Lidl, Wetherspoon pub and The Light cinema

Revised plans have been submitted for a block of flats in the heart of a town centre.

Last year a proposal went in for five apartments in Pembury Street in Sittingbourne, close to Wetherspoon pub The Golden Hope.

However, pre-application advice suggested the site would be more suitable with one less home.

Plans have now gone in for a four-storey residential block with an apartment on each floor.

The developer describes them as ideal “starter homes”.

The 2,000 sq m site sits to the rear of Station Street, behind the Light cinema, and was last used for car parking.

It is also close to the town’s Lidl supermarket.

A planning statement submitted by the applicant says: “It is the goal of this application to support the effective repurposing of vacant land for residential use, [and create] a positive contribution to Swale’s affordable housing strategy for local people.”

A decision is expected by January 23.

The proposal comes as planners consider a separate application to add 32 flats to Pembury Street.

Developers want to take the total number of homes at Pembury Court to 70 from its current 38.

An update was expected last month, however no decision has yet been made.
