A family of five had to be temporarily rehoused after a discarded cigarette caused a fire at their home.

The blaze broke out in the front bedroom of a house in Glebe Lane, Sittingbourne, at 8.04pm on Saturday.

Crews from Sittingbourne fire station were called to the scene and used breathing apparatus and hose reel jets to tackle the fire.

A woman, a teenage girl, two young boys and a toddler were all in the house at the time but escaped without injury.

The bedroom was partly destroyed and the rest of the mid-terrace property was damaged by smoke and heat.

Firefighters requested the Red Cross Victim Support Unit which provided immediate support for the family.

The house is owned by AmicusHorizon, which has temporarily rehoused the family.
