Moving to Ryman League Division 1 North would be disastrous for Sittingbourne

Sittingbourne chairman Andy Spice says a possible switch to Ryman League Division 1 North next season would be "ridiculous."

The Football Association’s National Leagues Committee were due to meet yesterday (Tuesday) to discuss the make up of next season’s constitution, amid reports that Bourne and Maidstone could be switched from the South to join Chatham and Thamesmead.

Mr Spice (pictured) said: "It would be disastrous, we would fight it very strongly. We couldn’t afford it, it is a ridiculous situation and not viable.

"It will leave us with a lot of travelling to do to clubs who won’t bring any supporters with them.

"Chatham have found it difficult in the North and I don’t think their overheads are as heavy as ours.

"We just have to wait to see what happens before we do anything."

One thing in Bourne’s favour is that the fact that in the past the Leagues Committee have used the proximity to Dartford Tunnel as a yardstick for switching clubs.

Thamesmead are closest, followed by Chatham and play-off finalists Dulwich and then Maidstone with Bourne Park 30 miles away.
