Kemsley Paper mill on fire as baled paper catches light

Households are being urged to close their doors and windows as firefighters tackle a large blaze at Kemsley paper mill.

Six appliances were originally called to the site, which is owned by DS Smith, off Swale Way at 3.05pm today - but that has now been scaled down to four pumps.

When they arrived, crews found a large amount of baled paper well alight.

The team used two main jets, two flat fan sprays and one hose reel jet to tackle the flames.

A mechanical digger has also been used to break up and move the stack.

At its height, smoke could be seen from as far as the Sheppey Crossing.
