Crews tackle fire at Margate Household Waste Recycling Centre

Fire crews were called to Margate Household Waste Recycling Centre today after a fire broke out in a container.

Two crews were called to battle the flames and had to use a cold cut firefighting system to punch a hole in the side of the container and spray mist to cool it down.

They then used rakes to get access to the fire and a hose reel to put the blaze out.

A Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "Reports from the crews are that it wasn't too serious and we extinguished the fire for the environment because it was sitting in approximately 12 tonnes of waste."

The fire service received the call at 2.40pm and had put the fire out by 3.29pm.
