Canoeist dies in tragedy in Highlands

A CANOEIST from Kent died after his canoe overturned and he became trapped in a gorge on the River Roy in the Highlands.

The victim has been named as Steven Pullinger, 49, from Rusthall, near Tunbridge Wells.

Ambulance staff tried to save his life but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The tragedy happened on Friday afternoon.

Members of the Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team also attended due to the remote location of the incident.

In recent days, the area has been badly affected by storms and floods making rivers particularly dangerous.
