Tunbridge Wells Borough Council launches YouTube channel

Tunbridge Wells Museum and Art Gallery has launched its own channel on YouTube.

The venue, in Mount Pleasant Road, now offers visitors the chance to view its collection online in the hope to allow as much access to work and displays as possible.

The launch of the YouTube channel was timed to coincide with an international competition between museums - Museum Dance Off.

Tunbridge Wells Museum & Art Gallery used YouTube to premiere their competition entry video which features the staff dancing along to the Bee Gees hit You Should be Dancing.

Jeremy Kimmel, audience development officer, said: "The video was the perfect way to launch the channel. It’s funny, and fun and lighthearted – just like the staff.

"We are proud of the museum, and we want to show it to the world.

Museum Dance Off is an online competition run via the blog, “When you work in a museum” and is in its third year.

The winner of the Dance Off is decided by public vote.

From April 18, museums which have entered will be pitted against one another each day, with only the most popular video going forward to the next round.

In the first round Tunbridge Wells is up against Minneapolis Institute of Art, History Colorado and Brooklands Museum.

The museum's YouTube channel will feature videos of behind the scenes tours, staff interviews, lectures, updates on the Cultural Hub project, and responses to online questions.

To watch the progress, or view the #museumdanceoff entry, search for ‘Tunbridge Wells Museum & Art Gallery’ on YouTube.

The museum has recently been awarded £4.3million earmarked funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and a further grant of just under £1million from the Arts Council for a project to develop a cultural and learning hub for the area.
