Ashford Holiday Inn evacuated after ceiling collapses

A hotel was evacuated after a water pipe burst and caused a ceiling to collapse.

The drama happened at the Holiday Inn, Canterbury Road, Ashford, just before 1am on Thursday.

The pipe burst in the roofspace above an unoccupied first floor bedroom.

The cascading water leaked into the bedroom below, causing damage there too.

Ashford station firefighter Neil Jones said: "The fire alarm went off and the hotel was evacuated.

"It had been a hot water pipe so when we got there the area was full of steam and very hot."

Crews managed to cut off the water supply and cleared up the damaged.

Two fire engines from Ashford were called and were at the scene for up to two hours.

Staff and guests had to stay outside the hotel for 40 minutes.
