A blaze that broke out this morning (Tuesday) at the Co-Op store in Brookfield Road, Ashford is believed to have started accidentally.

About 30 firefighters and six fire engines were at the scene tackling the fire which started at 2.40am.

Crews from Ashford, Wye, Charing, Aldington and Folkestone were sent to the single storey building.

About 70 per cent of it was saved from the flames.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus fought the fire in the shop's roof space.

Clive Douglas, Watch Manager from Ashford, said: "When we arrived the roof was already well alight.

"We had to use hydraulic equipment to gain access to the roof space and eight firefighters used breathing apparatus to fight the fire. Four main jets and compressed air foam helped bring the fire under control.

"I want to praise the hard work of the crews for a job well done. Due to their efforts we managed to save 70 per cent of the building."

A spokesperson for The Co-operative said: "The store is currently closed for safety and structural checks, and the cause is currently being investigated. No staff or customers were injured."
