Should you have an extra day off to celebrate St George's Day?

A Kent boss thinks so - and gave his staff an extra day's holiday yesterday.

Tim Allard, chairman of cavity insulation specialists Lion Insulation, which is based at Ashford’s Willesborough Industrial estate, told his entire workforce of 40 they could all stay at home for the day.

It was the second year running that Mr Allard has awarded his staff a bonus holiday.

The businessman, who lives near Folkestone, is so passionate that England should celebrate its national day on April 23 and for it to become an official bank holiday that he closes down production at the factory, telling everybody to go off and enjoy themselves.

He said: “Let’s face it, many other countries around the world have set aside a special day to celebrate and respect their patron saint.

“But for some unknown reason England’s day has sadly not enjoyed the same recognition.

“The English have received a pretty raw deal.”

His message to other businessmen: “I would urge them to take the plunge, make a real stand and be proud of this wonderful country.”

In 2006 a Private Members’ Bill was tabled in Parliament seeking legislation to ensure St George’s Day was made a public holiday.

Although there was not enough parliamentary time for it to become law, the Bill received support from members of all political parties.

Mr Allard celebrated St George’s Day with family and friends by erecting a giant marquee at his home in Acrise.

Guests tucked into a feast of roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, washed down with Spitfire ale.
