Folkestone Invicta boss Neil Cugley admitted he did not see Tuesday’s 4-0 win over relegation rivals Maidstone United coming, but is hoping it can be a springboard for his side.

Invicta moved out of the Ryman League Premier Division relegation zone and up to fifth-bottom, a point clear of the drop-zone having played a game fewer than two of the teams below them and with a better goal difference.

Cugley (pictured) said: "It’s been a long, long time since we’ve scored four goals in a game.

"I can’t say we’ve looked like doing it either, we’ve not created loads of chances in games."

The rout was Folkestone’s third game without defeat and was also memorable as 10 of the starting 11 had made more than 100 appearances for the club after Liam Dickson reached the milestone in Invicta’s previous game.

Cugley added: "One thing we have got is good lads who give everything. In terms of team spirit, we must be top of the league and we’re probably bottom in terms of wages.

"The players deserve to stay up because they have worked so hard. Their attitude is good, we might not have the quality that some sides have got but the effort and work-rate is superb."

Invicta travel to title-chasing Bury Town on Saturday before returning to the Buzzlines Stadium to host Carshalton on Tuesday. Roland Edge misses both games through suspension and Cugley exepcts Bury to be testing opposition.

He said: “It will be a very tough game at Bury. They impressed me a lot when they beat us down here.

" It will be a tough ask, but we’ll see how we come out of that game in terms of injuries and suspensions before we look ahead to Tuesday’s game.”
